Cougars take Game 1 over Lethbridge

REGINA, Sask. – Brittany Read had 28 points to lead the University of
Regina's women's basketball team to a 71-58 victory over the
Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday night in a Canada West quarterfinal
game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The game was delayed by over 90 minutes while waiting for the
officiating crew to arrive. After the contest finally started,
Lethbridge hung tough with the No. 4-ranked Cougars – at one point
midway through the first quarter, the Pronghorns led by eight points.

Lethbridge led 30-29 at the half, but the Cougars took the lead for
good early in the third quarter. Regina outscored the Pronghorns by a
19-10 margin in the third and put away the visitors with eight
consecutive points over a three-minute span in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we handled the disruption to the game like a veteran team,
but it still took most of the first quarter to get the rust off after
the two-week break," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "We took
advantage of Brittany's strength down low and started knocking down
some outside shots in the second half."

Read was 11-for-17 from the field, 6-for-9 from the free throw line,
and pulled down ten rebounds to register the game's lone
double-double. The third-year post's 28 points equalled her career
high.

Stacey Walker had 12 points, all of which came in the second half off
three-pointers. Gabrielle Gheyssen also had 12 and added six rebounds
for the Cougars.

Sam Hornqvist led Lethbridge with 13 points and tied Hannah Blanchette
for the team lead with five rebounds. Blanchette also had ten points and
five steals for the Pronghorns, while Kenzie Sheen chipped in with 11.

The victory gives the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three
conference quarterfinal series, which will continue with Game 2 on
Friday night at 7 p.m. If necessary, a third game will go on Saturday
night at 7 p.m.

Huskies close out season with win over Cougars

REGINA, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Huskies and the Regina Cougars closed
out the Canada West women's hockey regular season schedule on Sunday
night, with the Huskies emerging as 7-4 winners at the Sherwood Ice
Sports Centre.

Sara White came into the game with three goals on the season and doubled
that total in the win, leading the Huskies with a hat trick and adding
an assist for a four-point night.

The Huskies scored four times in the first period, getting two from
White and one each from Julie Paetsch and Danny Stone. Rianne Wight and
Kelcie McCutcheon both replied for the Cougars as Saskatchewan took a
4-2 lead into the first intermission.

Wight brought the Cougars to within one with a power play goal just over
two minutes into the second, and Rae-Lynn Somogyi tied up the game after
knocking in a rebound with five minutes left in the period.

Saskatchewan retook the lead for good just 15 seconds later, as Stone
scored her second of the contest and what would turn out to be the game
winner. Breanne George notched her 28th of the season only 23 seconds
after Stone's goal, and White added an insurance goal midway through the
third.

Chelsea Purcell had four assists for Saskatchewan, while Brianna Workman
made her second start of the season and stopped 20 shots in the win.

Lisa Urban made 28 saves for the Cougars (7-11-6).

For the second night in a row, the game was marred by penalties.
Saskatchewan was 4-for-10 on the power play, while the Cougars were
successful on three of their six opportunities with the man advantage.
The two teams combined for 46 minutes in penalties.

Saskatchewan finishes with a 16-5-3 conference record and will play
second-place Manitoba next weekend in a best-of-three Canada West
semifinal series.

The Cougars will travel to Edmonton next weekend to take on the Alberta
Pandas in the conference semifinals.

NOTES: George tied a Canada West single-season record with her 28th goal
of the season … George shares the record with Danielle Bourgeois
(Alberta, 2003-04) and Miranda Miller (Alberta, 2008-09).

Clark named Canada West Female Athlete of the Week

Canada West announced Monday that University of Regina women's
volleyball player Beth Clark has been named its Female Athlete of the
Week after her performance in the Cougars' weekend sweep over the
Winnipeg Wesmen.

Clark had 35 kills on 82 attacks during the two matches and hit for a
team-leading .329 percentage in the wins. She also led the Cougars with
eight total blocks and added 18 digs and two service aces.

"Beth showed a lot of composure and maturity on the court this
weekend," Cougars head coach Melanie Sanford said. "We had a tough
couple of matches and when the chips were down, we were able to raise
our game to another level and Beth was a huge part of that."

Clark is having a phenomenal season for the Cougars. The fifth-year
middle leads Canada West in points per set (4.24), ranks third in the
conference in hitting percentage (.324), and is fifth in kills per set
(3.28).

The weekend sweep over Winnipeg was critical for Regina, as the Cougars
improve to 12-6 on the season and have a chance to host a first-round
playoff series. The Cougars will finish off their conference season with
two road matches against Brandon (12-6) next weekend.

The award is the second of Clark's career. She was also named the
conference's Female Athlete of the Week on Oct. 27, 2008.

Clark will be Canada West's nominee for CIS Female Athlete of the
Week, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Cougars clinch playoff spot with win over Winnipeg

REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina's men's basketball team
clinched a playoff spot on Saturday night after defeating the Winnipeg
Wesmen by a 98-79 score at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The win improves the Cougars' record to 10-8 on the season, meaning
that they'll finish ahead of both Alberta (10-10) and Lethbridge
(9-10) and in no lower than third place in the Prairie Division
standings. Regina will finish in second place in the division and host a
first-round playoff series if the Cougars can record a weekend sweep
over Saskatchewan (12-6) next weekend.

Two points separated the Cougars and the Wesmen after one quarter on
Saturday, but Regina went on an 11-2 run midway through the second to
take control of the game. The Cougars took a ten-point lead into
halftime and maintained the double-digit advantage through the majority
of the third quarter.

A three-pointer by Nick Lother brought Winnipeg to within seven points
with six minutes left in the fourth, but the Cougars pulled away from
the Wesmen down the stretch to secure the win.

Three Cougars eclipsed the 20-point barrier in the win, led by Jeff
Lukomski's 27. Jamal Williams had 23 points and 13 rebounds for a
double-double, while Kris Heshka scored 22.

Lother led the Wesmen with 25 points. Peter Lomuro had 11 points, while
Eric Zimmerman chipped in with ten.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 0-19 on the year. The Wesmen will
play their final game of the 2009-10 campaign on Thursday at home
against Manitoba.

Regina and Saskatchewan will meet next Friday night at the CKHS and on
Saturday night in Saskatoon.

NOTES: Williams and Paul Schubach were both honoured prior to the
contest as Regina's graduating fifth-year players … Schubach had 11
points and tied for the game high in assists (5) ... Lukomski now has
236 career three-pointers, three short of the Canada West record shared
by Casey Archibald and Danny Balderson.
