Regina will finish in second place in the division and host a <br>first-round playoff series if the Cougars can record a weekend sweep <br>over Saskatchewan (12-6) next weekend. <br> <br>Two points separated the Cougars and the Wesmen after one quarter on <br>Saturday, but Regina went on an 11-2 run midway through the second to <br>take control of the game. The Cougars took a ten-point lead into <br>halftime and maintained the double-digit advantage through the majority <br>of the third quarter. <br> <br>A three-pointer by Nick Lother brought Winnipeg to within seven points <br>with six minutes left in the fourth, but the Cougars pulled away from <br>the Wesmen down the stretch to secure the win. <br> <br>Three Cougars eclipsed the 20-point barrier in the win, led by Jeff <br>Lukomski&#39;s 27. Eric Benjamin battled through a foot injury to finish as the team’s fifth runner. The last time the Cougars were ranked higher in the top ten poll was back in October of 2005, when they held down the No. 3 position. Now 5-1 on the season, the Cougars will have this weekend off before playing their final games before the Christmas break on Nov. 20 and 21 against Alberta.<br /><br />Men’s Volleyball – The Cougars (0-6) suffered two road losses to Thompson Rivers last weekend, losing in straight sets on both Friday and Saturday in Kamloops, B.C. Jamie Wilkins was solid on the outside for the Cougars, putting down 12 kills with just three errors for a team-leading .360 hitting percentage. The team will have a weekend off before returning to action on Nov. 20 and 21 against No. 3-ranked Alberta (4-2).<br /><br />Rams Football – The Rams’ season ended on Saturday after being defeated 53-23 by the Saskatchewan Huskies in the Canada West semifinals in Saskatoon. Marc Mueller set U of R playoff records in completions (32) and passing yards (470), but it wasn’t enough to lift the Rams into the Canada West final. Jordan Sisco also had a solid game for the Rams, scoring three touchdowns and catching eight passes for 161 yards.<br /><br />Men’s Wrestling – The Cougars sent nine wrestlers to the 17th Annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Saturday, hosted by South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. Kirk Ackerman, who advanced to the consolation quarterfinals at 141 lbs., was the team’s top finisher. The team will return to the Dakotas this weekend for a Thursday dual against Jamestown College and a Friday dual and Saturday tournament at Dakota Wesleyan.<br /><br />Women’s Wrestling – Four members of the U of R’s women’s wrestling team competed at the Clan International in Surrey, B.C. on Friday. Lisa McKibben was the Cougars’ top finisher, placing sixth at 67 kilograms. Ryan Sawka and Carter Smith scored for Regina on Friday, and Dan Bohemier notched the lone goal for the Cougars on Saturday. This weekend, Regina will entertain Lethbridge (3-4-1), with game times<br />scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.<br /> <br />Rams Football – The Rams thought their season had ended after a 42-17 loss to Saskatchewan on Friday, but the playoff picture changed on Tuesday. Manitoba had to forfeit three wins due to the use of an ineligible player, moving Regina up to the fourth and final conference postseason berth. The Rams will now face Saskatchewan on Saturday in the Canada West semifinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Griffiths<br />Stadium in Saskatoon.<br /><br />Women’s Basketball (CIS Ranking: No. 4) – The Cougars finished off their non-conference schedule with an impressive 11-2 record after defeating Concordia at home on Friday and Saturday. Riding a nine-game winning streak, the Cougars are ranked No. 4 in this week’s CIS poll as they get ready to start the Canada West schedule. Regina will travel to Lethbridge (0-2) this weekend to play their first two games in the conference’s new Prairie Division.<br /><br />Men’s Basketball – The Cougars finished their non-conference schedule with a 6-2 record after a 100-76 road loss to Minot State on Friday night. The U of R will travel to Lethbridge for a pair of important Prairie Division games against the Pronghorns (0-2). Game times are scheduled for 8 p.m. MST on both Friday and Saturday night.<br /><br />Women’s Volleyball (CIS Ranking: No. 6) – The Cougars improved to 3-1 on the season after recording two three-set victories at Saskatchewan. The two wins moved the Cougars up to a tie for No. 6 in this week’s CIS poll, up from No. 7 last week. In sole possession of third place in the conference, the U of R will travel to Thompson Rivers (0-2) for a pair of matches against the WolfPack.<br /><br />Men’s Volleyball – Now 0-4 on the season after losing to Saskatchewan on Friday and Saturday, the Cougars return to action this weekend on the road. The team will travel to Kamloops, B.C. to square off with Thompson Rivers (0-2). The teams will play at 7:45 p.m. PST on Friday night and 6:45 p.m. PST on Saturday night.<br /><br />Cross Country (Men’s CIS Ranking: No. 4) – The U of R’s cross country team jumped two spots in the CIS poll this week after an impressive showing at the Stewart Cup. Despite missing top-five runner Eric Benjamin, the Cougars still scored a second-place finish in the team standings thanks to top-ten finishes by Kelly Wiebe, Wyatt Baiton, and Iain Fyfe. Wiebe won the individual title with a time of 31:26 over<br />the ten-kilometre course. The team is now in preparation for the CIS Championships in Kingston, Ont. on Nov. 14.<br /><br />Men’s and Women’s Wrestling – After a weekend off, the Cougars will take part in the 17th Annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Saturday. The competition, hosted by South Dakota State University, will begin at 9 a.m. at the Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D. The U of R’s women’s team has its first competitions of the season this weekend, as the Cougars will compete in the Hargobind Open on Friday and the Clan International on Saturday in Surrey, B.C.<br /><br />Women’s Hockey – The Cougars (1-4-1) fell victim to the high-powered offence of No. 3-ranked Alberta over the weekend, losing 7-0 to the Pandas on both Friday and Saturday at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre. The U of R has another weekend off coming up and will return to action against Manitoba on Nov. 14 and 15. The two games against the Bisons will be played at the Communiskate Rink in Emerald Park.<br /><br />Women’s Soccer – The Cougars (2-12-0) finished off their 2009 season with a 3-1 loss to Lethbridge on Saturday and a 2-0 setback to Calgary on Sunday.
